In the States in lesson from Ian D'Agata to learn more about the "indigenous" Apulian vines.
Wines of Puglia come to Texas thanks to Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia and its project “Around the world with Wines of Puglia”
The Cantina d Ruvo di Puglia is in the spotlight after the response of the panel of judges of the Radici del Sud contest, that selected the 70 finalists of the contest, having reached its XII edition, dedicated to the wine and oil of the South.
Over 350 were the samples offered up to the buyers, journalists, and enologists, and members of the Vinarius circuit in the Normanno Svevo di Sannicandro castle in Bari. The panel of judges of the Wine Writers paid tribute to Castel del Monte Rosato PDO 2016 – Terre del Grifo the winner’s scepter in the rosé category, while the wine buyers judged another of the company’s products, the Augustale riserva docg 2012, best Nero di Troia. Recognitions that attest to the worth and honesty of the work done day in and day out by the partners and enological staff to produce extremely high quality wines at competitive prices. The grapes of the company come from 1500 ha of hilly vineyards (from 450 to 250 m asl) located just outside Ruvo di Puglia, under the shadow of the castle of Federico II with its octagonal towers. In the territory of Castel del Monte, always bathed in sunlight but never torrid or windbeaten, the vineyards are dried and sprayed with sea breezes. This allows limitation of conservation treatments of the fruit to the bare essentials.
Active for over 50 years, the winery unites about 620 viticulturists under its mark which make up the cooperative. Always high-level thanks to the outstanding aspect of the vineyards and strict inspection of the vegetative processes, this grape is transformed having as its inspiring principle research into quality and enhancement of autochthonous grape varieties, grown with innovative techniques, but always in step with the territory’s winemaking tradition. From the Bombino Bianco, Greco, Trebbiano and the Pampanuto, white wine, neutral, fruity, and well structured. The Bombino Nero is the base for obtaining rosé wine with a refined structure and elegance. From the Nero di Troia, the Sangiovese, and the red Bombino spring great red wines, full-bodied, balanced, and harmonious. The Moscatello, a typically aromatic grape variety, goes well ith sweets and desserts.
The wines of the Cantina di Ruvo di Puglia, with their bouquet, highlights, and flavors, thus speak of a generous land, rich in history and culture, and place themselves on the Italian, European, and worldwide markets. The awards won “at home” are a stimulus to continue with even more determination down the path of quality, with a backed hope of being—in the future—a step higher on the podium. At the end of June the 70 finalists will be put to the test once more by a panel of experts and journalists from the territory who will announce the best white, red, and rosé.

The Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia Consortium is flying to China to take part in the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair for the sixth consecutive year – this year’s fair is from 5th to 7th November.
The wineries representing the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia are Amastuola of Massafra (Ta), Casa Vinicola Coppi of Turi (Ba) and Varvaglione Vigne&Vini of Leporano (Ta). They will be in the Vinitaly International area of the fair, extended by 10% this year to over 1000 square metres of exhibition space.
“This the opening event of the new VinidiPuglia VI CMO project” comments President of the MTV Puglia Consortium Sebastiano de Corato “bringing us back to one of the most prestigious and exciting markets for our wineries looking to expand their businesses. The VinidiPuglia VI project will run until the end of October 2016 – he continues – and will take the thirteen participating wineries on a world tour to China, Canada, the USA, Brazil and other countries outside Europe to publicize and promote the quality, typicality and genuineness of our products and the entire Puglia brand”.
Hong Kong is a very strategic and interesting starting point, as it not only offers a “fast track” for exports to continental China, but is itself one of the crucial markets for Italian wines. Just last year, wine imports to Hong Kong grew by 5.1%, worth a total of 984 million euros (source: HKTDC), of which the Italian share was 1.5%, while a further increase in wine imports took place between January and July 2015 (source: Istat).
The last International Wine and Spirits Fair hosted over 1,000 exhibitors from 38 countries and welcomed over 20,000 buyers from more than 75 countries. This confirmed the fair as an excellent springboard for wineries interested in entering and consolidating their brands on the Asian market, which is very interested in high quality Italian products.
